Using the MegaSquirt-I (MSnS-E) with a MSD 6A Ignition Box on a TFI Vehicle (such as the 86-95 Mustang) This setup drives the MSD box through a BIP373 transistor (for a V3.0 board) or 2N2222A (for a V2.2) and works with the stock Ford fast idle valve. The V3.0 version can also drive a coil directly. No more problems. I don;t know the circuit design of the module but something about that poor electrical connection of the old module caused the "brain" to advance the timing to a point the engine would not crank against the early firing cylinders. For whatever mystery of 12V Auto ELectronics, it also reduced coil operating temps The ignition system was designed around all of its components, and there were no issues at all. Occasionally, an external ballast would fail (break internally), and though the engine would start, as soon as the ignition key was released to run, it would shut off since there was no voltage being supplied to the coil.
The CDI (Capacitive Discharge Ignition) throws about 400 volts at the ignition coil, compared to the puny 12 volts of an Inductive ignition. With a 400-volt supply to the coil the coil saturation time problem is completely overcome, and the MSD module it's self is capable of firing the ignition system reliably at 15,000 RPM and above.
Apr 07, 2020 · No spark indicates an ignition problem. In extreme cases the (PCM) may have failed. In some cases, a (PCM) problem will cause the vehicle not to run at all. Mar 25, 2015 · I have a Ford 460 (7.5L) and I'm having some ignition problems with my MSD distributor, MSD CD Ignition box (6A) & MSD coil. I'm thinking about scraping the MSD parts and letting the EFI control my timing. I've read several posts about guys using a Ford TFI distributor, with the TFI module mounted remotely in a heat sink. The Profile Ignition Pickup sensor signal (more commonly called the PIP signal) is critical for the ignition control module to start sparking the ignition coil at START UP and at all engine speeds. The Profile Ignition Pickup sensor is a Hall Effect type crankshaft position sensor and produces a digital (On/Off) signal that can be seen with an ...The capacitor discharge ignition system generates huge electromagnetic noise and this is the main reason why CDIs are rarely used by automobile manufacturers. The short spark duration is not good for lighting relatively lean mixtures as used at low power levels. To solve this problem many CDI ignitions release multiple sparks at low engine speeds. When the ignition module fails, the engine turns over normally, but doesn't even sputter or kick like it's trying to start. Of course, other situations like a failed fuel pump or even a clogged fuel filter can cause the same symptoms.
